My research focus revolves around developmental mechanisms that drive differentiation of different domains in median fins. In general, the differentiation of those structrures happens on three levels:
i) Signalling molecules initiate the developmental process by regulating...
ii) Master control molecules, that can directly interact with the DNA and thus induce or repress the transcription of…
iii) Realiser genes which code for proteins that execute the sent signals.
Unraveling the differences on all three levels between spines and soft rays in an acanthomorph species, Astatotilapia burtoni, finding the underlying developmental mechanisms of adipose fin spines in Ancistrus species and pinpointing what drives development of scutes in Acipenser ruthenus are the major projects of my PhD thesis.
I am using different moleacular techniques, like Whole mount in situ hybridisation, CRISPR/Cas9 mediated Knockout mutants and others, to approach the raised questions.
